Alto vocal range: F3 to F5
A trained alto typically sings from F3 to F5, two octaves. Most people who sing for fun use a narrower comfortable range inside that, often around G3 to D5.
How to tell if you're a alto
Voice type is mostly about where your voice sits comfortably, not the single highest note you can reach. Measure your lowest and highest easy notes; the type whose range has the closest middle is your most likely fit. Neighbouring types overlap a lot: tenor (C3–C5) and mezzo-soprano (A3–A5).
Warm-ups for altos
- Vocal warm-up for altos (G3–D5): high notes without straining
- Vocal warm-up for altos (G3–D5): singing in tune
- Choir warm-up for altos (G3–D5)
Ranges: typical ranges of trained voices (McKinney, The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults). Our range test reads E2–C6.
